Rosewood History

Rosewood Design & Construction is solely owned and operated by Steve Childs.  Rosewood specializes in two primary areas of the residential construction market.  Do we do other things?  Absolutely.  We simply have more experience renovating classic period style buildings and building leading edge energy efficient homes.  Both these market segments are a passion of Steve's within the industry.

He started building his skill set studying business in college, doing an internship in guitar design and construction followed by a program focused on furniture design and construction.  The early years working in the field were spent as a cabinetmaker and field tradesman in New England communities full of historic buildings and cutting edge contemporary buildings using the newest technologies.  For example, working on a 150 year old home, followed by building a new passive solar home brought the diversity of projects, and field techniques, that kept things interesting and honed problem solving skills.

Attention to detail opened the door to manage the renovation of, and addition to, a large historic commercial building in downtown Portland, Maine.  Word of the success of that renovation and approval of its historic tax credits spread in the community.  Other historic renovations and the construction of an 80,000 sq. ft. 4 star hotel on the coast of Maine built in the classic coastal shingle style jump started Steve's career as a detail oriented field supervisor, problem solver and project manager.

After years spent completing 16 large commercial projects Steve incorporated Rosewood in 1996 and decided to go back to doing residential projects.  He found residential projects offered a better work/life balance and clients were generally more appreciative of the work.  These projects also offered more opportunities to produce custom casework, trim and detailing.

Steve built and/or renovated a wide variety of homes on or near the coast of Maine from 1996-2012.  In 2012 he moved back to SE Michigan to be close to his extended family.  After a few years getting reacquainted with the Michigan market and building a network of trades people and suppliers, he became a Michigan licensed builder in 2017.
